The global travel and tourism industry has seen a growing focus on wellness, with approximately 21% of global travelers now choosing health- and wellness-driven reasons for their journeys, according to the 2022 Travel Trends research by Virtuoso, a luxury travel network, in collaboration with YouGov.
This wellness trend is also making waves in the African travel industry, where several safari camps and lodges are introducing new wellness initiatives to cater to this demand.
One notable initiative comes from Natural Selection, which has appointed a wellness guide, Robyn Sheldon, at its camps located in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. With over 30 years of experience, Sheldon plans to offer nature-integrated healing sessions at Natural Selection camps starting in March. These sessions aim to promote deep relaxation, mindfulness, stress and anxiety reduction, and overall well-being for safari guests.
Robyn Sheldon is based at Thamo Telele, one of Natural Selection’s camps on the outskirts of Maun. As a specialist wellness guide, she can join guests at any point during their safari to enhance their wellness experience.
In addition, Wilderness Shumba and Busanga Bush Camp, situated in Zambia’s Kafue National Park’s vast Busanga Plains, have also expanded their wellness offerings. They now provide a range of locally inspired, in-tent treatments for guests. Those staying at the camps for a minimum of four nights can enjoy a complimentary 60-minute treatment, choosing between a Moringa Radiance Facial or Ulendo Hand and Foot Massage.
These wellness initiatives in African safari camps and lodges reflect the growing importance of health and well-being in the travel industry, responding to the needs and preferences of modern travelers.
